Inari village is its own starting area. If you are arriving through Ivalo Airport or staying in Ivalo or Saariselkä, plan the journey before choosing a morning meeting point. The places are connected by road, but they do not share one automatic activity pickup zone.

Choose the outdoor part of the day

ActivityThe main experiencePractical detail to settle
Guided ice fishingFishing instruction and time at a chosen lake spotHow you reach the activity base outside the village if required
Guided snowshoeingA moving forest outing with equipment and a guideDistance, terrain and the footwear you bring

If you mainly want to spend time beside the lake, start by comparing the fishing programme. If you would rather keep walking, look at the snowshoe outing. You can do both over a longer stay, but neither needs to share a day with every other activity.

Ice fishing on Lake Inari

Guided ice fishing introduces the equipment and leaves time to practise at a selected spot. Access can involve a guide-driven sledge, depending on the programme and conditions. The journey onto the lake is part of the fishing arrangements.

Check the earlier road journey separately. Our current Inari fishing outing meets at a confirmed Inari-area activity base, which may be outside the village. Road collection from your accommodation or from the village is not included in that product.

This distinction matters if you do not have a car. Establish how to reach the base and return before filling the afternoon with another booking. A description of sledge access does not mean the trip begins at your hotel.

Winter outer clothing and boots, a hot drink and a light snack are included as listed. A catch, a fish lunch or a particular heated shelter is not guaranteed. Choose the outing for the fishing experience and outdoor time rather than a specific result.

Snowshoeing in the forest

A guided snowshoe walk gives the day more movement. After getting familiar with the equipment, the group follows a route selected for the conditions and its walking ability, with time for a warm drink.

The basic programme focuses on a local forest outing. Ask about terrain and the expected distance if people in the group have different needs. A photograph of a fell summit does not establish that the tour climbs it.

Our Inari snowshoe outing includes local return transport from an agreed central village meeting point and thermal outer clothing. Bring appropriate winter boots unless the booked programme specifically includes them. Check this detail when packing rather than assuming every piece of winter kit comes with the snowshoes.

Leave time for the Juutua river landscape

The Juutua river gives you a different view of Inari from the open lake. Metsähallitus describes the Juutuan polku trail through riverside and pine-forest scenery, with the Jäniskoski rapids as one of its features. The complete trail is roughly six kilometres, so decide how much of it you actually want to walk.

The official local trail brochure describes winter maintenance and shorter approaches to the riverside area. Use the current trail information and local condition advice to choose an appropriate section. A route's total distance is more useful for planning than treating it as a quick stop between appointments.

You can keep the riverside walk as a flexible part of the day. The landscape can be enjoyed from land routes; the presence of snow and ice is not a reason to invent a shortcut across the river or lake.

Give Siida its own place in the plan

Siida is a useful separate visit for learning about Sámi culture and northern nature. Allow it a meaningful part of the day, rather than assuming you can fit the exhibitions into whatever short gap remains after a tour.

For winter 2026–27, Siida lists Monday–Saturday opening and Sunday closures. Check its own calendar for exceptions and current visitor information before setting the order of your days. Museum admission and a museum transfer are separate from our basic fishing and snowshoe outings.

Siida's arrival information also makes the geography useful for planning: it lists around 40 kilometres from Ivalo and 50 kilometres from Ivalo Airport. A flight arriving at Ivalo does not place you in Inari village, and the airport connection should be arranged on its own terms.

A practical day in the village

One option is a guided nature outing, a meal and time at Siida when the opening day and confirmed return allow it. Another is an independent village and riverside day, with the guided lake or forest programme on the following day.

Choose the actual activity departure before fixing the rest of the schedule. A fishing base outside the village needs more margin than a walk starting nearby. Leave a proper meal break as well; a tour snack is not a replacement for the whole day's food.

An Inari northern lights tour can add a vehicle-based evening with viewing stops. Check the return time and the following morning's plans. The sky remains dependent on natural activity and viewing conditions, and no specific sighting is promised.

Plan from the right starting area

If you are staying in Ivalo, start with the Ivalo winter guide and establish a separate Inari connection before choosing village-based activities. Likewise, an included Inari local transfer does not automatically cover Saariselkä or an outlying lodge.

Book our winter outings at least 28 days ahead. The Inari activity selection shows the current programmes and their meeting arrangements, including the important difference between the fishing base and the central snowshoe starting area.
