For a short stay, a useful mix is one active forest outing, one animal programme and some unscheduled outdoor time. If part of the group skis, choose the shared outing first and let slope time fit around it.

Walk on routes intended for winter use

You can spend time outdoors without committing to a whole guided programme. Ruka's official winter walking and snowshoeing information describes local routes and their permitted uses. Start with that information instead of following whichever track looks easiest from the village.

Vuosseli has a maintained multi-use route for walkers, skiers and cyclists. Other paths may be affected by fresh snow or thaw and are not necessarily groomed. A summer hiking route can also be used differently in winter; the official trail descriptions help distinguish those options.

Choose a distance that fits between the day's other plans. A short independent walk can be enough when you have a farm departure later. For a longer outing into unfamiliar terrain, a guided programme can make the route and equipment arrangements simpler.

Snowshoeing: choose the type of route

A guided snowshoe walk gives you an introduction to the equipment and a route selected for the group. It suits visitors who want to walk through the winter surroundings without learning a skiing technique.

Compare the intended terrain rather than assuming all snowshoe trips are alike. A local forest outing, a fell route and a national-park day trip can differ in distance, effort and travel time. The basic activity in our selection does not promise a particular summit or national park.

Oulanka and Riisitunturi appear in the wider region's winter activity offering, but they need their own route and transport arrangements. A photograph of a snow-covered fell is not enough to establish that a standard local outing goes there. Choose a specifically described park trip if that destination is the main reason you want to book.

Ice fishing for a slower day

Ice fishing gives the day a different rhythm. You spend time at a selected spot, learn the equipment and try the technique, with a warm-drink break during the programme.

Ask how the fishing place is reached. A nearby lake accessed on foot and a programme with a longer road or sledge journey make different use of the available time. The final access arrangement follows the booked programme and conditions.

The basic outing includes fishing instruction and time to practise. It does not promise a catch or a fish lunch. If you want a relaxed afternoon afterwards, leave a meal break in the plan rather than immediately adding another fixed departure.

Reindeer or huskies?

A reindeer farm visit and sleigh ride is a slower farm-based programme. Read the promised ride distance and the total duration separately. Time with the host and the animals is part of the visit, as is the journey to and from the farm where included.

A husky safari focuses on the dogs, the briefing and the sled route. For the approximately five-kilometre option, the ride is one part of the overall programme. Driving arrangements depend on the booked option and the group's requirements.

Both activities can follow fixed farm slots. If you want them on the same day, check the full return journey before comparing the headline start times. The journey between two different activity bases takes longer than moving between activities at one site.

A snowshoe evening under the sky

An evening snowshoe outing combines walking after dark with time to look at the sky. It can be a useful choice when you enjoy the walk itself and would like the possibility of northern lights.

Check the local activity base and how you will reach it before booking. Dress for walking and for the pauses when you stand still to watch the sky.

Can you manage without a car?

It depends on your accommodation and the journeys you want to make. A stay near your chosen activity’s local base can simplify the journey. Arrange how you will reach that base from your accommodation and return afterwards.

Check the current local bus and SkiBus information, including fares and operating dates. For winter 2026–27, Ruka states that lines 1 and 2 require a ticket for passengers who do not meet the listed free-travel conditions. Do not assume every holiday guest travels free, or that a local bus serves the farm you have chosen.

A simple stay without skiing

On your first full day, combine a local walk with the farm activity you care about most. On another day, choose snowshoeing or fishing and leave room for a meal. Add the evening snowshoe outing only if its timing and walking requirements suit the group.

The order is flexible; a fixed farm departure or a specific operating day should shape it. Late-season dates need a product-level check, because the ski season and individual safari seasons are different calendars.

Book winter tours at least 28 days ahead. Use the existing Ruka–Kuusamo activity selection to compare the actual programmes, starting areas, clothing and included transport before setting the final plan.
