Three days in Rovaniemi in winter: what to book and what to leave open
For three winter days in Rovaniemi, choose one main daytime activity per day and leave one evening available for the northern lights. A farm visit, time in the forest and a longer nature trip give the stay variety. City sights and a winter walk can fill the spaces around them without adding another fixed departure.

Rovaniemi is useful for this kind of trip because you can combine a city base with outings to farms, lakes and forest trails. The journeys still take time. Start with the experiences you care about most, then plan meals and independent exploring around the confirmed arrangements.
A workable three-day outline
| Day | Main plan | Flexible addition |
|---|---|---|
| First full day | Reindeer farm visit or husky safari | Arktikum, a meal in town or a short independent walk |
| Second day | Snowshoeing or ice fishing | Santa Claus Village if the travel and opening times fit |
| Third day | Korouoma day trip, or the farm outing you have not chosen | Keep the evening free unless the group wants another late finish |
This is a suggested order, not a combined package. Actual departures and the length of your arrival and departure days decide what fits. A day with a flight in the middle is not a full sightseeing day.
Day one: choose reindeer or huskies
A reindeer farm visit and short sleigh ride is a good starting point if you want a slower introduction to the surroundings. The host, the animals and time at the farm are substantial parts of the visit. A short introductory ride covers much less ground than a long reindeer safari, so compare the ride distance as well as the overall duration.
A husky safari puts more emphasis on sled dogs and the sled route. Allow time for preparation and the briefing before you reach the trail. An approximately five-kilometre ride is one part of the programme; the advertised overall duration also includes other arrangements. Whether you drive or travel as a passenger follows the particular booking.
Choose the one that matters most to the group. If you want both during the stay, it is usually easier to give each its own space than to connect two fixed farm departures with a tight transfer.
For time indoors, Arktikum brings together Arctic and regional exhibitions. Check its opening calendar when setting the order of your days. For the 2026–27 season, the museum lists daily opening in January and February, followed by Monday closures from March. Individual exceptions can change the plan.
Day two: spend time in the forest or on a fishing outing
A guided snowshoe walk suits a day when you want to keep moving. The guide introduces the equipment and chooses the route for the group and conditions. The basic forest outing gives you time outside without needing to organise a trailhead, equipment and route yourself.
Ice fishing changes the pace. After learning the equipment, you spend time at a selected fishing spot rather than following a longer walking route. A hot drink and time outdoors are part of the day even when nothing takes the bait.
Keep the rest of the day flexible. A short outing still takes preparation, transport and time to change clothing afterwards. Check the full programme before adding a second booking.
Santa Claus Village is an independent option if you want to visit the Arctic Circle area. The village has no general entrance fee, while individual services and attractions have their own charges and opening arrangements. It is around eight kilometres north of the city, so include the journey rather than treating it as a quick walk between central sights.

Day three: make room for Korouoma
If a longer walking day is a priority, set aside a full day for the Korouoma frozen waterfalls trip. The programme includes the return journey from Rovaniemi and a winter hike. It works best when you can give the day to that outing instead of trying to fit another farm visit around it.
Korouoma's attraction is the canyon and its winter ice formations. The route and the appearance of the ice depend on conditions. This is a hiking programme, with uneven or slippery ground; it does not include an ice-climbing session. Read the walking requirements and the clothing arrangements before choosing it for the group.
If you prefer a shorter third day, use it for the animal outing you did not choose earlier. That leaves more room for the city and an earlier evening.
Leave an evening for the sky
A northern lights evening can fit after a shorter daytime plan. Check the return time before committing to an early outing the next morning. After a full Korouoma day, some groups will prefer dinner and a free evening.
Northern lights need suitable natural activity and viewing conditions. Choose a programme you are comfortable joining even if the sky does not produce a sighting. A scheduled evening also has its own duration; check that rather than assuming every aurora tour runs through the night.
A winter walk without another tour booking
Ounasvaara offers an independent outdoor option close to the city. Visit Rovaniemi describes a marked winter walking trail, with access points and viewpoints, separate in places from the summer nature trail. Use the official trail information to choose an appropriate section and check current conditions.
You do not need to complete a whole circuit to make use of the area. A shorter walk may be a better addition between the main activity and a meal, especially in the shorter daylight of midwinter.
What changes from January to April?
The brighter part of late winter gives more room for daytime plans. April still needs a date-specific check: a farm, fishing trip and longer hiking excursion can finish their winter programmes on different dates. Snow remaining in the landscape does not confirm a particular departure.
For the tours in our selection, book your date at least 28 days ahead. Included local return transport starts from the meeting area stated in the product; check the arrangements for your accommodation separately. Compare the current Rovaniemi winter activities before setting the final order of the stay.
